Dr Carlo Buontempo is the Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), part of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). C3S is a service that provides authoritative information about the past, present and future climate, and supports European adaptation and mitigation policies. Dr Buontempo coordinates the activities of a number of international contracts at C3S, working on the interface between climate science and decision making in sectors ranging from energy to city planning. His work is pivotal to the development of proof-of-concepts and real-life applications of climate data. He has prior experience leading the climate services and climate adaptation teams at Met Office (UK), and has an academic background in Physics. His professional interests include climate projections, forecasting and modelling in the context of global climate change.

” Climate affects most of our activities, but in no sector the connection is as close as it is for agriculture. In spite of this intimate relationship, the agricultural sector is not yet using the technological development that has occurred in the field of weather and climate modelling to its full extent. MED-GOLD is playing a key role in this process, and provides tangible examples of how the open and free climate data that programmes such as C3S are providing, can be successfully used in decision-relevant contexts”
